Superior Building Product Technology Improves Security

Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, a leading global provider of products and services designed to make environments safe, secure and productive, has developed many innovative products aimed at increasing public safety and enhancing building facilities.

Bomb rated automatic doors
Increased awareness of security and terrorism has influenced product development and the search for better design and products to protect buildings and people. One of the latest developments is the new range of bomb rated automatic doors, manufactured by Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. Up to now, architects and designers have been unable to incorporate fully protective entrance systems into their projects. Consequently, over the last two years, the research and development division of Ingersoll Rand
has focused on the development of a suitable solution without creating a fortress environment. The result is a new high performance solution for public entrances that require a blast-resistant, secure, bi-parting automatic door system that will withstand the blast overpressures associated with a vehicle bomb. This is particularly suitable for high risk areas and buildings, such as railway stations, airports and other transport hubs. It is capable of withstanding the effect of 100kg TNT explosions as close as 25m.

Dramatic testing
A new website, www.bombblastdoors.co.uk, showcases dramatic video footage of the bomb blast test. This includes information about the range as well as a link for ordering a new comprehensive guide to blast protection automatic doors. The aim of the tests was to prove that people can be protected from the effects of an explosion, such as high-velocity shards of glass, and to ensure that after an explosion, door security is not unduly compromised and integrity is maintained. The range met or exceeded the GSA (C) and ISO EXV 45 and ISO EXV 25 standards. Chosen for their ability to provide effective bomb blast protection to the public and buildings, the new bomb rated auto doors are currently being installed at one of the UK’s busiest airport terminals.

Biometrics to control access
Access control is just as important to building security. Ingersoll Rand is an expert in the field of access control, time and attendance, and personal identification products, with the capacity to supply a complete security package. Biometrics, the science of studying a person’s physical characteristics in order to identify them, has now come of age. Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies is leading the way with some of the most widely deployed biometric approaches, fingerprint and hand geometry, offering secure, reliable and cost effective alternatives to card only based systems. While many biometric technologies and companies are in a start up phase, Ingersoll Rand has decades of experience, with over 120,000 installations worldwide. These include the Northern Ireland Prison Service, the US State Department, Rotterdam Harbour and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Fingerprint readers
Fingerprint readers are a secure and low cost biometric solution for access control points that have minimal traffic flow and small user populations. They are particularly suited for gaining access to secure areas, such as computer rooms, document control facilities and laboratories.

Hand readers
Biometric hand readers are more advanced. They instantaneously analyse more than 31,000 points and 90 measurements of an individual’s hand. Fast and easy to use, they have proven to be widely acceptable by users and are ideal for high volume, high throughout openings and for high security environments. They can be used as a means to positively identify a person holding a transaction card, driver’s licence, passport, Visa, or other documents. Biometric hand readers from Ingersoll Rand have been installed at Ben Gurion airport. Over 80,000 Israeli citizens have now enrolled in the system, which processes about 50,000 passengers each month. This has enabled the airport to increase security while enhancing convenience for its multitude of travellers. In an age where terrorism and security dominate the media, putting them at the forefront of people’s minds, it is important to be able to provide the environments benefiting from the latest security and safety technology.
